This is the story of a dream pipe’s birth. It takes place in the summer of 2001 on Georgian Bay. Joy and I had sailed into a secluded bay and moored to the rock shore for the night. I dreamed of the pipe. In the morning I began to carve the stem. We were in the islands for 7 days on that trip. By the time we returned, the pipe stem was carved.

All that summer I wrote nature poems and made drawings, from the backside of Franklin Island, Dart Island in the McCoy’s, The Pond behind Sandy Island, Lake Superior and the lovely Aspen forests of the Alberta foothills. I feel the mood of these poems carries the making of the pipe story.

Many thanks to Joseph Gilbert, the man who appeared out of nowhere carrying pipe stone for the bowl. I would also like to thank Joy Allan, Bob Foster, Graham Ketcheson, and Carolyn Horley for all the help they have given me.

Excerpt from 'Dream Pipe'

Down through
the moving walls
of
cool bay air
my eyes
rest on
shadow leaf patterns
wander over
rust pine needles
laced with thin
spindly yellow green
grasses
blue moss  green moss
ferns
with their arms
spread
ready to embrace
the sunburst pine
My heart rises above
the ground juniper
with the green,
green berries
follows a trunk
and rolls down
a dead branch
reaching out
to scratch the
soil
Small birch flowering elders
large oak and pine
filled with the soft murmur
of gentle surf
Squirrel and bird sound
speak of spirits
and
the fullness that surrounds
